Because pathophysiological studies also suggested an involvement of BAFF in the pathogenesis of pSS, we conducted the first open-label proof-of-concept study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of belimumab in pSS and found promising clinical results, including a decrease in disease activity as assessed using the European League Against Rheumatism Sjögren’s Syndrome Disease Activity Index (ESSDAI) and in patients’ symptoms as assessed using the European League Against Rheumatism Sjögren’s Syndrome Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI).
