In addition, histopathological examination revealed that while WT mice on HFD showed only slight lipid accumulation in the liver, which is consistent with previous reports [12–14], eNOS-/- mice on HFD developed severe macrosteatosis and hepatocyte ballooning (Fig 3H) that were indicative of the presence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
