These associations are well-known in the Japanese general male populations [14,41] and were significant in the alcoholic male population after adjustment for the ADH1B and ALDH2 genotypes, although susceptibility to diabetes in Japanese alcoholic men is higher in the presence of the ADH1B*2 allele and ALDH2*1/*1 genotype [6], and BMI is strongly negatively association with the presence of the ADH1B*2 allele [12]. This evidence concerns the gene ALDH2 and diabetes mellitus.
