In the case of OATP2B1, the glutamate gradient would increase its ability to accumulate its substrates, e.g. statins, within hepatocytes where they can inhibit 3‐hydroxy‐3‐methylglutaryl‐coenzyme A (HMG‐CoA) and in muscle where they are linked to statin‐induced myopathy (Hagenbuch & Stieger, 2013). The gene discussed is SLCO2B1; the disease is myopathy.
