WHHL rabbits are genetically deficient in low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) receptor due to a spontaneous 4-amino-acid deletion in the cysteine-rich ligand-binding domain in exon 4 of the LDL receptor and develop hyperlipidemia and spontaneous atherosclerosis on a normal chow diet [10, 11]. Here, LDLR is linked to atherosclerosis.
