A recent study has identified a new mechanism by which IFN-α induces an antiangiogenic milieu, increasing the sensitivity of endothelial cells to soluble vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), also known as fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt1), and suggesting that elevated IFN-α may contribute to the pathogenesis of preeclampsia in some SLE pregnancies [33]. This evidence concerns the gene VEGFA and systemic lupus erythematosus.
