For example, increased CD14+HLA-DRlow/− cells correlate with tumor progression and poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma patients,34 and the numbers of CD14+HLA-DRlow/− cells are associated with extrathoracic metastasis and poor response to chemotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer patients.35 In B-cell NHL, we found that patients with increased ratios of CD14+HLA-DRlow/− monocytes had more aggressive disease and suppressed immune function.14 These findings indicate that CD14+HLA-DRlow/− monocytes are an important contributor to systemic immunosuppression in NHL.36 The gene discussed is CD14; the disease is neoplasm.
