We have previously shown that preterm infants are developmentally-deficient in intestinal TGF-β2 expression, which predisposes them to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)—an idiopathic, acquired inflammatory bowel necrosis seen almost exclusively in infants born prior to 32 weeks of gestation [1,2]. This evidence concerns the gene TGFB2 and necrotizing enterocolitis.
