PLG and cancer: The D-dimer is a specific indicator that reflects degradation of cross-linked fibrin polymer by plasmin and is widely used as assessment tool for diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis.14 The role of D-dimer as a prognostic factor has been evaluated mostly in operable colorectal, pancreatic, and lung cancer.15–17 Given the suggestion that cancer progression may closely be associated with the activation of blood clotting system, we hypothesized that D-dimer serves as an indicator for cancer progression.
