Coxsackievirus B4 infection accelerated T1D in NOD mice, whereas α-GalCer injection at the time of infection activated pancreatic iNKT cells that produced rapidly large amount of IFN-γ and upregulated indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase production by macrophages recruited in the pancreas. The gene discussed is IFNG; the disease is type 1 diabetes mellitus.
