Bacterial LPS were shown to activate proinflammatory production of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 through TLR2/4 activation in macrophages, VSMCs, and endothelial cells that could lead to the atherosclerosis-associated vascular remodeling and plaque destabilization (Li et al., 2012; Paolillo et al., 2012). This evidence concerns the gene TLR2 and atherosclerosis.
