Recent studies have shown that streptozotocin changes the property of the membrane by affecting its associated fatty acids and their transporter [79], altering the associated proteins that maintain its electrical properties [22], causing misfolding of cellular proteins [80], affecting vesicular membrane associated proteins SNAP23, syntaxin-4 and VAMP-2, SNARE, and glucose transporter (GLUT-4) [81], which, in turn, induces diabetes or diabetes induced cellular or organ dysfunction. This evidence concerns the gene SNAP23 and diabetes mellitus.
