Because enhanced erythropoiesis in PHZ-treated mice may increase not only CD71+ reticulocytes but also CD71− younger erythrocytes as reported in individuals with iron-deficient anemia (Clark et al., 2014), it is postulated that in these PHZ-treated mice the PyNL parasites infected those younger cells rather than the mature erythrocytes.
