Since hepcidin has a well-described, central role in ACD [17], in which its expression is upregulated predominantly by IL-6 in response to infections such as tuberculosis [14, 15], these results provide further evidence to suggest that ACD is the predominant mechanism underlying anemia in patients with HIV-associated tuberculosis [12, 13]. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is granular corneal dystrophy type II.
