The former possibility is supported by several findings suggesting that L-leucine, an amino acid that increases translation by activating the mTOR pathway, is able to partially rescue the anemia phenotype of zebrafish RP morphants and increases the number of erythroid cells in red cell culture assays where CD34+ cells are infected with shRNAs against RPS19 or RPS14 [47,48].
