Abnormally hyperphosphorylated Tau was discovered as the major protein subunit of paired helical filaments (PHFs) that form neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) (Iqbal et al., 2010), with NFTs being a diagnostic hallmark of AD (Grundke-Iqbal et al., 1986; Wang & Liu, 2008). This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and Alzheimer disease.
