Nrf2 reactivity within neurons was similarly low as in the cortex of normal controls and the normal-appearing MS cortex, even in highly inflammatory cortical lesions with extensive NADPH oxidase expression in microglia, massive accumulation of oxidized lipids in the neuronal cytoplasm and signs of neuronal degeneration, despite high expression of Nrf2 in adjacent cells with oligodendrocyte morphology (Fig. 4h, i).
