Recently, variation of expression of several adhesion molecules has been found to influence not only the metastatic cascade, but also escape from immune surveillance.35 Particularly, ICAM-1 is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of proteins expressed in all leukocytes and on the surface of many cancer cell types, which shows altered expression in malignant diseases and involved in the process of cancer metastasis.47 In this study, decreased expression of ICAM-1 in colon cancer could be related to the aggressive nature of the tumor, and has a poor prognostic effect on colon cancer. The gene discussed is ICAM1; the disease is malignant colon neoplasm.
