SLC1A2 and schizophrenia: EAAT1 and EAAT2 immunoreactivity in neurons has been demonstrated in postmortem brain12 where EAAT2 reactivity was detected in dendritic spines, particularly in the postsynaptic density, and in neuronal soma on ribosomes and the rough endoplasmic reticulum.12 GLT1 and GLT1b immunoreactivity has been identified in retinal neurons52 and in neurons in rat brain culture.35 We have now shown that EAAT1 and EAAT2 splice variant mRNA is differentially expressed in an enriched population of pyramidal neurons in the ACC in schizophrenia and controls.
