CXCL12 and myocardial infarction: Interestingly, upon myocardial infarction, murine epicardial-derived cells (EPDCs) secrete a plethora of paracrine factors mostly related to angiogenesis (Vegfa, Angpt1, Ang, Fgf1, Fgf2, Fgf9, Pdgfa, Pdgfc, Pdgf) among others (Adamts1, Sdf1, Mcp1, and IL-6) and are able to proliferate and migrate toward the infarcted myocardium, giving rise to perivascular fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells (Zhou et al., 2011).
