In a study [37] that compared healthy subjects with patients presenting with carotid atherosclerosis, a significant increase was found in the expression of all of the components of the 5-LO pathway, in addition to levels of BLT1 and BLT2 mRNA (measured by real-time PCR), in peripheral blood mononuclear cells; levels of LTB4 were also increased in plasma (measured by ELISA). Here, LTB4R is linked to carotid atherosclerosis.
