Because M1 macrophages produce higher levels of interleukin (IL)-12b and IL-23 and lower levels of IL-10, CCL17, and CCL22 compared with M2 macrophages [50, 51], we examined mRNA expression of these cytokines in the THP-1 cells stimulated by PMA and treated with the CM of HCC cells to study whether miR-26a affects polarization of macrophages. The gene discussed is CCL22; the disease is hepatocellular carcinoma.
