The role of adiponectin as an intermediate in the association between moderate alcohol intake and reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes is further weakened when considering evidence from a large-scale Mendelian randomization study that demonstrated that adiponectin is unlikely to be causally associated with type 2 diabetes (30) [a recent meta-analysis also revealed that adiponectin levels are not predictive of coronary heart disease either (31)]. Here, ADIPOQ is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
