HLA-C and neoplasm: The use of CARs, that recognize non-MHC-restricted structures on the surface of target cells, is highly attractive for several reasons: first it allows to overcome HLA-restriction, thus permitting to use the same CAR for several patients, second, because tumors can frequently fail to present tumor antigens to T-cells through the down-regulation of MHC expression (Curran et al., 2012), and such mechanism would not affect CAR efficacy.
