ERVW-1 and multiple sclerosis: Two particular members of HERV-W family are of special interests: ERVWE1 (coding syncytin-1, which is a glycoprotein essential in the formation of the placenta) and MSRV (multiple sclerosis-associated retrovirus that is thought to play a significant role in human pathology as a result of its increased expression in the brain tissue and blood cells derived from patients with multiple sclerosis (MS)).
