GRIN1 and stroke disorder: Indeed, treatment with simvastatin has been shown to reduce NMDA receptors (NMDAR1) in lipid rafts, thereby protecting neurons from NMDA-induced neuronal death.25 Another protective mechanism elicited by statins is due to the inhibited synthesis of isoprenoid intermediates, which serve as lipid attachments for a variety of intracellular signaling molecules such as nitric oxide.26 Our study adds another possible mechanism that accounts for the benefit of statins following stroke.
