Clusters 2 and 3 had a mirror-like structure, cluster 2 being positively associated to obesity- and inflammation-related traits (BMI, fat mass, lean mass, adipocyte volume, C-reactive protein [CRP], interleukin[IL]-6, leptin and adiponectin) and negatively related to lipids and diabetes-related traits (total, LDL and HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, metabolic syndrome [MetS], glucose, insulin and Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance [HOMA-IR] index), while cluster 3 showed associations in the opposite direction. This evidence concerns the gene LEP and diabetes mellitus.
