Consistent with the rodent literature, methylation of DNA associated with genes implicated in psychiatric disorders including GR (Perroud et al., 2011; Tyrka et al., 2012), FK506 binding protein 5 (FKBP5; Klengel et al., 2013), the serotonin transporter gene (5HTT; Beach et al., 2011), and bdnf (Perroud et al., 2013) is altered in adults that experienced adversity (i.e., maltreatment, low socioeconomic position early in life). Here, FKBP5 is linked to psychiatric disorder.
