Consistent with the rodent literature, methylation of DNA associated with genes implicated in psychiatric disorders including GR (Perroud et al., 2011; Tyrka et al., 2012), FK506 binding protein 5 (FKBP5; Klengel et al., 2013), the serotonin transporter gene (5HTT; Beach et al., 2011), and bdnf (Perroud et al., 2013) is altered in adults that experienced adversity (i.e., maltreatment, low socioeconomic position early in life). The gene discussed is BDNF; the disease is psychiatric disorder.
