Anemia was associated with a greater degree of inflammation as indicated by greater ACT concentrations (anemia vs. no anemia: 0.43 vs. 0.32 g/L; P = 0.003), as well as an inflammation-induced iron redistribution profile typified by comparatively greater hepcidin and ferritin and lower transferrin and iron concentrations (P < 0.09). Here, HAMP is linked to anemia.
