While stimulation with purified galectin-9 or U112 infection alone moderately induced ROS production in peritoneal neutrophils, pre-treatment of neutrophils with this lectin induced an increased amount of ROS in response to F.n. infection, which was significantly higher than that elicited by galectin-9 or F.n. infection alone (Fig 4A).
