Besides this demonstrated high serodiversity in the environment of V. parahaemolyticus strains with pathogenic potential (i.e., non-O3:K6 strains encoding the tdh gene), the pandemic strain O3:K6 caused >81% of reported cases of gastroenteritis, attributable to V. parahaemolyticus between 2004 and 2013 in the Pacific Northwest coast of Mexico. Here, TDH is linked to gastroenteritis.
