More extreme forms of the phenotypic effect of nrf2 induction on lipid and cholesterol synthesis are reported in animal model systems in which the nrf2 inducers sulforaphane, oltipraz and the synthetic triterpenoid CDDO-imidazolide have each been shown to prevent obesity in mice fed high fat diets [20,34,35], an effect that is reduced in nrf2 knockout mice [34]. The gene discussed is NFE2L2; the disease is obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
