FABP2 and necrotizing enterocolitis: Although no interventions other than the aforementioned conservative measures (i.e. gastric decompression and broad-spectrum antibiotics) exist to prevent the progression of NEC, I-FABP, whether measured in plasma or urine, provides the clinician with a valuable tool: if patients, who eventually do not develop NEC, can be identified at the time when only non-specific symptoms are present, NEC-specific treatment can be avoided and duration of conservative treatment can be limited.
