Epidemiological studies have shown that serum GGT is related to markers of oxidative stress,2 and experimental findings have shown that GGT plays a crucial role in cellular antioxidant defense systems.3 Serum GGT concentration is also positively associated with markers of inflammation, such as C-reactive protein (CRP),4,5 and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).6,7.
