In the present study, we used immunohistochemistry, fluorescence staining and western blot analysis and demonstrated that HIF-1α was highly expressed in both the epithelial layer of keloid tissue specimens and in hypoxia-exposed keratinocytes, which suggested that the keloid keratinocytes underwent epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in vitro. The gene discussed is HIF1A; the disease is keloid.
