Finally, recently shown activation of insulin receptor-mediated transmission a newly discovered mechanism of augmented neurogenesis (Ziegler et al., 2014), can per-se result in pro-neurogenetic and neuroprotective activities that are characteristic for the antidepressants of various classes (Duman and Li, 2012), and, thus, can underlie pro-cognitive and antidepressant effects of DS.
