The hepatocyte-specific KO of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-Coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) that causes steatosis with jaundice, hypoglycemia and eventually death, does not prove that the observed pathologies are due to the absence of cholesterol, since the isoprenoid, ubiquinone and heme A pathways are also depleted12. The gene discussed is HMGCR; the disease is steatosis.
