Ultimately, a definitive demonstration of the biological role of AMPK and SIRT1 proteins was provided by infection of WT, myeloid restricted (Mac)-AMPK KO and Mac-SIRT1 KO mice with L. infantum, with evaluation of the parasite load in the spleen, liver and bone marrow 10 days post-infection.
