PAK5 phosphorylates the transcription factor GATA1 mainly at Ser161 and Ser 187, phosphorylated GATA1 recruits more HDAC3/4 to the promoter of E-cadherin and consequently suppresses the transcription of E-cadherin gene and promotes the EMT of breast cancer cells (Figure 7).
