In this connection, our previous finding has demonstrated that HCF1, a semipurified fraction of Cistanches Herba (a dried whole plant of Cistanche deserticola Y.C. Ma characterized as a “Yang-invigorating” tonic herb in traditional Chinese medicine), was shown to be effective in preventing diet-induced obesity and its associated metabolic abnormalities [4]. The gene discussed is HCFC1; the disease is obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
