Because GST-P-positive foci are generally accepted to be precursors or preneoplastic lesions of HCC in rats (Tsuda et al., 2003; Ando et al., 2007), the rodent model used in this study appears to be well suited for screening reagents that can prevent NAFLD/NASH-related liver tumorigenesis. The gene discussed is GSTP1; the disease is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis.
