NPC1 and cancer: In mammalian cells, cholesterol, in the form of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), is recruited to FAs from late endosomes in an acid lipase, NPC1- (Niemann-Pick C1 protein) and Rab8a-dependent fashion, resulting in increased number, size and turnover of FAs, and consequently enhanced cancer cell migration (Kanerva et al., 2013).
