In fact, it is well known that one of the earliest pathogenic events in atherosclerosis is represented by the overexpression of cell surface adhesion molecules, which causes the binding of normally non-thrombogenic circulating cells, such as monocytes, to the endothelium: the activation of NF-kB pathway triggers the upregulation of the expression of the vascular cell adhesion molecules (VCAM-1), intercellular cell adhesion molecules (ICAM-1), and E-selectin in response to various inflammatory cytokines (117).
