Telomerase is deregulated in most human cancers including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC [16]) and can immortalise normal and neoplastic keratinocytes that lack the expression of the INK4A locus or a combination of p53 and p16INK4A proteins by lengthening the telomeres and restoring their function [17].
