TERT also plays important roles in neuroprotection (Fu et al., 2000; Wolf et al., 2011; Li et al., 2013), and it was recently shown that disruption of the telomerase activity in mouse hippocampus led to depression-like behavior, which could be rescued by the antidepressant fluoxetine and by Tert-expressing viral vector injection, coupled with the upregulation of telomerase activity (Zhou et al., 2011). This evidence concerns the gene TERT and depressive disorder.
