A significant decrease in PEDF level in the eyes has been observed in patients with age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, two major blinding diseases characterized by neovascularization (Ogata et al., 2001; Spranger et al., 2001; Holekamp et al., 2002; Ogata et al., 2002; Boehm et al., 2003). The gene discussed is SERPINF1; the disease is age-related macular degeneration.
