Because HIF1α can promote both glucose uptake (by elevating the levels of the glucose transporter GLUT1) and its conversion through glycolytic flux, it can be speculated that elevation of HIF1α in cancer will further inhibit mPTP activity by increasing the levels of glucose (to be considered as an inhibitor of mPTP) but can also impede the accumulation of glucose 6-phosphate (which can serve as an mPTP inducer) through the regulation of glycolytic enzymes and inhibition of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH).
