While these studies confirm that the inhibition of BMP signaling plays a role in maintaining progenitor cells in a CSC-like state, contradictory reports show that activation by BMP2 enhances CSC-like populations in ovarian carcinoma [57], and BMP4 stimulates an epithelial-to-mesenchymal and a CSC-like phenotype in a squamous cell carcinoma cell line of the tongue [37].
