A large number of experimental studies have established the neuroprotective effects of alpha-2 selective agonists against a variety of retinal injury models [90]–[93] including transient ischemia-induced RGC loss [94]–[97], ocular hypertension induced retinal damage [98] and light-induced photoreceptor degeneration [21].
