Under these hypoxic conditions, hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α is overexpressed and enhances the transcription of several genes encoded for angiogenic and autocrine growth factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), survivin and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which consequently promote cancer cell proliferation and metastasis [10,11].
